Institutional Biosafety Committee Training Requirements

Please note that an IBC submission will not be considered complete and ready for approval until all personnel training requirements have been satisfied. The courses listed below are offered to IU personnel via the
E Training platform on One.IU.edu.

If lab personnel do not have an IU email address, please contact the IUPUI IBC Office or IUB IBC Office to set up an IU affiliate account.

NIH Guidelines Training

Under the direction of the Office of Biotechnology Activities (OBA) at the NIH, the IBC has developed a brief training outlining the NIH Guidelines, which is required by all personnel performing work on an IBC protocol, regardless of the project funding source or protocol exemption status.

Biological Safety Training

Biological Safety Training is required for personnel associated with work in biological laboratories, either for research or teaching purposes. The training ensures that personnel working in certain laboratories have been trained in basic biological safety principals before conducting work in laboratories at Indiana University. This training is intended to promote a safe laboratory working environment and to help ensure compliance with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules and the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, 5th ed.

Bloodborne Pathogens Training

Under the direction of the US Occupational Safety & Health Administration, all individuals performing work in which occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials (as defined by 29 CFR 1910.1030) may occur, must be provided and complete training for the safe handling and disposal of these materials.

N95 Fit Test

Respiratory protection, such as an N95 respirator, may be necessary when work with biological hazards cannot be conducted inside a biological safety cabinet and there is an aerosol risk. All personnel that are required to use respiratory protection (such as N95 respirators) must be registered in the Indiana University Respiratory Protection Program.
