Animal Care and Use Protocols expire three (3) years from the date approved. A renewal should be submitted several months prior to expiration to avoid a lapse in coverage. Under no circumstances will the BIACUC "extend" a protocol beyond its expiration date.
The BIACUC office will send a courtesy notice to the Principal Investigator 5-6 months prior to expiration, but it is the PI's responsibility to track each protocol expiration date and submit a renewal well in advance. A lapse in protocol coverage will suspend animal research activity for that study and is subject to reporting to NIH and other granting agencies.
Animal Care and Use Protocols that use USDA-regulated species must be updated annually. This action is required by the United State Department of Agriculture. The BIACUC Office will email an Annual Renewal form to the PI at least 60 days prior to the approval anniversary date. The form must be completed and returned prior to the approval anniversary date.
